Research Interest Group (RIG) Update

Shirley Quach RRT HBSc
Fall has fallen upon us!
It is that time again…school has begun, and before long it will be Christmas with 2020 just around the corner!
The Research Interest Group has been actively compiling a mentorship list. Our goal is to create a research mentorship database of RRTs with any level of research experience. We hope to pair individuals interested in learning more about research in respiratory therapy or in clinical practice with research-experienced RTs.
Please reach out to office@rtso.ca if you are interested in volunteering to be a resource to fellow RTs. Your contribution to helping aspiring RTs in research is valuable.
Stay tuned for exciting things to come in the Research Interest Group section of RTSO Airwaves, from Research 101 to Students Corner.
Research Interest Group (RIG) Student Volunteer Movement
The main goal of the RTSO Research Interest Group (RIG) is to foster a positive impact in Respiratory Therapist’s practice and knowledge. One of the ways RIG does so is by having the student volunteer team to bring forward respiratory care related content for the professional and student communities. In particular, the student volunteer team aims to share research pertaining to Respiratory Therapy on our Facebook page and in the “Students’ Corner” section of RTSO Airwaves.
The student movement has already been taking place. Two of the volunteers, Mithin Koshy and Harry Kanathasan, have already published a few original articles in RTSO Airwaves and Facebook. Their articles have not only provided diverse perspectives on the emerging health trends, they have also inspired and encouraged other Respiratory Therapy students to take initiative in exploring different aspects of respiratory care. In addition to promoting research content, the student volunteer team aims to assist in advocating respiratory professional events such as the annual Leadership Summit and INSPIRE Education Conference. The RIG believes that by increasing the exposure of professional development events on social media, this can raise awareness of education opportunities amongst the Respiratory Therapy community and also enhance curiosity.
In the near future, RIG will share more resources for Respiratory Therapists and students who are interested in conducting research. The RIG hopes to create a fundamental research toolkit, therefore assisting RTs in achieving their academic goal in extension of their clinical roles.
