Job Description for The President-Elect

Society Overview:

The RTSO is a non-profit organization of professionals devoted to promote and advance the interests of Ontario Respiratory Therapists by creating opportunities for professional growth, advocacy and research. We do this through strategic partnerships, professional collaboration and leadership.


Position Overview:

Reporting to the President and the Board, the President-Elect shall assist the President in all matters and activities as requested by the President.  During the absence or disability of the President, his or her duties may be performed and his or her authority may be exercised by the President-Elect.  The President-Elect shall also perform such duties and exercise such authority as the President may from time to time delegate to him or her as the Board of Directors may request.  The successful candidates agrees to a three-year commitment in which he or she will transition from President-Elect, to President and then Past-President. The President-Elect will be a member of the Executive Committee; such Committee shall be charged with the responsibility of administering the Society with such authority, powers and limitations as the Board by resolution between Board meetings may from time to time determine, and shall consist of a President, Past President, President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer.

Duties include
:
  1. Active participation in Management and Board Meetings
  2. Assistance in the planning and management of the annual strategic planning meeting
  3. Assistance in the planning and execution of the annual Inspire Conference and Leadership Summit
  4. Advocacy for the profession at the Provincial Ministry Level
  5. Engaging in addressing the concerns of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
  6. Public promotion of the profession

The successful candidate shall:
  1. Be in good standing as an active member of the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
  2. Be in good standing as an active member of the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario
  3. Experience within the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario Board or a Committee is preferred
  4. Demonstrate strong communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with others
  5. Evidence of sound organizational and prioritization skills and the ability to work well in stressful situations
  6. Demonstrate excellence in work performance and attendance record
  7. Experience in public relations and Ministry initiatives is an asset

Expectations of Board Members

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be in good standing with the RTSO and with the CRTO
  • Enforcement and compliance with the RTSO bylaws, policies and procedures, and appropriate governing legislation for non-for profit organizations
  • Support vision and mission of RTSO
  • Assist, direct and advise the Board of Directors
  • Actively engage and recruit RTSO members
  • Share your skills and expertise with the board
  • Dedicate time to participate in afterhours board meetings monthly (1-2 hours monthly via phone + emails)
  • Participate in at least one committee (1-2 hours monthly via phone + emails)
  • Participate in yearly educational forum (INSPIRE) and Leadership Summit
  • Respect and support decisions made by the board
  • Come prepared and actively participate in board meetings
  • Have no more than three consecutive unexcused absences from board meetings
  • Declare conflicts of interest as it pertains to your position on the board
  • Commit to a 2-year term
