Shawna MacDonald, RRT FCSRT BEd

As we emerge from the pandemic’s third wave, there is a growing sense of cautious optimism despite the high rates of burnout and exhaustion.  I sincerely wish you all recovery, renewal and resilience moving forward.  If you are struggling, please take care of you and seek professional help.  Again, I will remind you that the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) has developed a mental health hub to support RTs’ mental health and well-being during and beyond the pandemic. This bilingual resource connects respiratory therapists to a wide range of supports including: crisis and support lines across the country, national and provincial/territorial mental health programs and initiatives, mental health resources for workplaces and entry-to-practice RT programs, information on mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and resources to help RTs manage grief and bereavement. You can find this resource within the CSRT Supports for Practice section of the CSRT website, at: https://www.csrt.com/csrt-mental-health-resources/

Along with RTSO reports, you’ll find an update on the RTSO Workforce Planning Initiative: COPD Patients Access to Clinical Services Provided by Registered Respiratory Therapists Across Ontario.  This issue also features the reflections and reviews of some enthusiastic RT students, through student literature reviews focusing on the topic of COPD, with some great reads on treatment options as well as palliative care.  Student Corner features a reflective piece submitted by St. Clair College RT student Karissa St. Louis-Leclair, on living and learning in an RT Program through the pandemic.  Conestoga College RT students, Sheena & Wesley, also story the student experience and highlight the importance of community engagement.  We hope you enjoy their wonderful contributions!

Farewell Message

“Parting is such sweet sorrow.” ~Shakespeare

This is my last editorial, as I bid adieu to my role as Editor-in-Chief of RTSO Airwaves.  The last 7 years serving the RTSO has been incredibly memorable – so many great people and many accomplishments to be proud of as a professional society.  The mentorship, guidance and support from the volunteer Board and committee members has truly been second to none!  I will never forget the colleagues and friends I have made, and will be forever grateful for this experience. However, it is time to pass the proverbial torch to Genevieve Breault-Tozer.  May her voice be strong and passionate as she advocates for change and shares her enthusiasm for story-telling and this amazing profession, and may RTSO Airwaves be lifted to new heights through her leadership and vision!

It’s been such an honour and privilege.  Stay safe, be well, and take care of each other.

Respectfully,

Shawna
