Shawna MacDonald, RRT FCSRT
Director; Editor, RTSO Airwaves; Neonatal Nurseries RRT, McMaster Children’s Hospital
Shawna is a graduate of Fanshawe College – Respiratory Therapy diploma program – class of 1992. In her 23 years of practice, she has held many positions, working in Guelph and Windsor prior to settling in at the McMaster site of Hamilton Health Sciences in January 1995. For a few years, she practiced in all patient care populations, but eventually practice areas became de-centralized at McMaster, and Shawna’s practice became focused on neonatal and pediatric care and management, where she practiced for several years, fostering a love and passion for neonatal respiratory care, and education. In November of 2006, Shawna left her role at the bedside to become the McMaster Children’s Hospital RT Educator and Student Coordinator for these specialty rotations; she held this role until 2011. In April 2011, restructuring at Hamilton Health Sciences led to Shawna being appointed as multi-site Respiratory Education Clinician at Hamilton Health Sciences, covering multiple sites and areas of practice. Shawna also became a CSRT Fellow in 2011. Shawna has worked to build and standardize a Respiratory Therapy orientation program and has worked on several other quality improvement, patient safety, and team-building projects.
In May of 2015 after much personal reflection, Shawna transitioned back into a bedside clinical role in the Neonatal Nurseries at McMaster Children’s Hospital.
Shawna’s professional interests include neonatal care and management; professional advocacy; interprofessional collaboration & education; using simulation to enhance learning and skill development; and Mindful practices, including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and yoga.
Shawna is pursuing a degree in Adult Education from Brock University, and lives in Stoney Creek with her husband, two children, and family’s goldendoodle, Ginger.
